Vitamins

Vitamins are organic substances that are essential for the proper functioning of the human body. They are required in small amounts but play important roles in various physiological processes. Vitamins cannot be produced by the body in sufficient quantities, so they must be obtained through diet or supplements.

There are two main types of vitamins:

  • Fat-soluble vitamins: These vitamins (A, D, E, K) dissolve in fat and can be stored in the body’s fatty tissues. They are absorbed through the intestinal tract along with dietary fat and are best consumed with meals containing fats.
  • Water-soluble vitamins: These vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12 and C) dissolve in water and are not stored in the body. Any excess is excreted in urine. Because they are not stored, they need to be consumed regularly through the diet.

Each vitamin has a unique function in the body and a deficiency or excess of any vitamin can lead to health problems. Therefore, it is important to consume a balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein sources to ensure adequate vitamin intake. In some cases, supplements may be recommended to meet specific vitamin needs.
